Engineering firm Lydall expects Lean Six Sigma to help boost is results later this year, it has been revealed.

Dale Barnhart, president and chief executive officer of the company, explained that it had been focused on controlling costs during the economic downturn and this looks like it should have the desired effect.

He said: "Going forward in 2009, we anticipate the significant progress we have made in improving our business operating processes through Lean Six Sigma, coupled with the major cost reductions from the North American automotive consolidation, will improve the company's financial results as our markets begin to stabilise."

By lowering costs, the firm has been able to better manage the impact of the recession on revenue, he added.

Mr Barnhart's comments came as the firm revealed that net sales for the second quarter of 2009 stood at $56 million (£34 million), compared to $84 million during the same period in 2008.

Recently, chemical firm Stepan revealed that Six Sigma techniques have helped it boost its earnings during the first half of the year.
