Tyre manufacture Goodyear has underlined its commitment to Six Sigma processes as it look to cut costs.

Speaking on the firm's 2008 fourth quarter earnings call Robert J Keegan, chief exertive officer of the company, explained that the firm will being doing all it can to ensure that it meets investors' needs.

He explained that this is vital to ensure that strong results achieved last year are not overshadowed by the economic downturn.

"[This will be achieved] by increasing our continuous improvement efforts through lean manufacturing and Six Sigma, delivering increasing purchasing savings, eliminating non-essential discretionary spending with tight controls on indirect spend, and continuing to close under-performing retail stores," he said.

As well as this, the company will look to reduce manufacturing capacity as demand falls away, Mr Keegan added.

Recently, Jean Cunningham, chief financial officer of Six Sigma specialists Stiles Associates, told Industry Week that firms should make sure they identify areas for improvement before bringing IT applications into the equation.
